Arsenal gunning for 100 Premier League goals

andrei_arshavinArsenal are on course to become the first team to score 100 goals in a Premier League season.

And the worrying thing for their opponents is that Arsène Wenger believes his side will get even better.

Arsenal have plundered 36 goals in 11 games. Tottenham managed 111 when they finished second to Everton in 1962-63, but that was in the old league, and Manchester United came close in 2000 with 97. No side have managed a ton in the Premier League. But at this rate it seems a feasible target for Arsenal.

“I don’t know,” Wenger mused. “But what is possible is to play even better. The result shows the way we play suits the team. I enjoy the way we play.”

All of the managers of the ‘Big Four’ clubs believe, or at least say they believe, that their side have the tools to win the league this season. Whether they are able to back that up is a different matter.

Wenger chooses to focus on his side’s ablilty to adapt to the differing tactics which opponents throw at them as evidence that they are on to a winner.

“Different teams try different styles and we manage to find solutions,” he explained. “It’s very good for us because we are not destabilised by the physical style, or when a team drops back. Every time we manage to find a solution and to score goals.

“We play with three strikers most of the time. We have kept our philosophy to pass the ball at a high pace in very tight areas. The basis of our philosophy has not changed.” It is worth noting that Wenger stressed his side must maintain humility.

Continuity in their philosophy means continuity in some of their frailties, and while his manager might be confident the goals will keep on rolling in, Cesc Fabregas is not so sure. The Arsenal captain delivered an important warning: the goal well will at some stage run dry.

“There will be a time when we cannot score goals,” the Spaniard cautioned.

“It will be maybe not that easy and we will have to be patient. It is in that moment where we have to be strong.” In defence especially.
