France ‘embarrassed’ by Thierry Henry handball
Thierry Henry’s former Arsenal and France team-mate Emmanuel Petit has claimed the French public are “embarrassed” by the striker’s handball which booked them a place at the World Cup Finals.
While Ireland hope Fifa will order a replay of the World Cup qualifier, players, pundits and officials in the game have criticised Henry for the incident which marred the second leg in Paris.
Henry handled the ball on two occasions in the lead up to William Gallas’ winner in extra-time and Petit has revealed the backlash the Barcelona striker faces in his homeland.
“The feeling among the French public is one of embarassment,” Petit told the Sun.
“More and more often we see people cheating to reach their targets so Thierry’s handball will not send out a good message.”
David Ginola echoed Petit’s sentiments. The former Newcastle and France midfielder added: “I do not feel very proud to be French at the moment. Something should be done. The whole world saw it was handball. I am very embarrassed.”
England midfielder David Beckham, meanwhile, has stuck up for the French striker.
“I honestly didn’t think Thierry meant it,” said Beckham. “I know him as a player and a person. He’s a good person and a great player.
“It’s a shame to see Ireland go out because they have such great fans but these things happen in football. I really don’t think he meant it.
“I’ve had a few headlines in the past which have not been nice but I don’t think he is a cheat.”
