Arsenal are edging closer to signing Claudio Yacob from Argentina’s Racing Club as Arsene Wenger looks for new recruits to bolster the Gunners’ midfield.

Yacob is out of contract at the end of the season but the north London club made an enquiry over the player’s availability last week, with a formal move planned in the summer.

The 24-year-old is a combative midfielder, often compared to compatriot Javier Mascherano who plays a similar role for his club Barcelona and country.

Yacob is highly thought of at Racing Club, but it is understood they are willing to let him go to as this would reduce the club’s wage bill.

Although his arrival would not come in time to help the Gunners misfiring season his proven pedigree would certainly improve the current squad: Yacob was a regular in the Argentina team that won the Under 20 World Cup in 2007.

Arsenal slipped further off the Champions League pace on Wednesday night after their 0-0 draw with Bolton meant they have collected one point from the last 12 available and trail fourth placed Chelsea by five points.

But boss Wenger believes they can still qualify for Europe’s elite knockout tournament, despite the continuing slump.

‘Of course I am confident of top four finish,’ said Wenger. ‘There is a long way to go. I’m confident we can come back. We have come through a difficult period. We lost three league games but could have won them as well.

‘We are confident but I believe we have to produce our form game by game. For us, every game in the championship now is a cup final.

‘We go into a period now playing in the FA Cup, playing in the Champions League and, combined, those three will be difficult.’
