There is a growing belief inside Arsenal that Cesc Fabregas will be sold this summer to Barcelona in a £50million deal.

Wenger persuaded Fabregas to stay last summer despite persistent overtures from Barcelona.

What the manager wants to avoid is yet another three months of speculation regarding his captain.

Arsenal’s strategy has echoes of Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid two years ago when Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson talked the Portuguese star into extending his stay at Old Trafford by a year before selling him to the Spanish giants for £80m.

And if Barcelona now come in with an offer for Fabregas that Arsenal find difficult to resist, and if the player makes it clear that he wants to return to his native Catalunya, Wenger is unlikely to stand in his way. He will use the cash to supplement his transfer kitty which is thought to be around £50m.

Wenger is also set to take a hard line with Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri.

Both will have just one year to run on their contracts, and Wenger plans to talk to their respective agents this week.

But if no new-deal agreement can be reached, the French internationals will be sold to avoid their departures on free transfers next June.

Wenger has already checked out Borussia Dortmund youngster Mario Gotze as a potential replacement for Nasri and he has Kieron Gobbs as a ready-made replacement for Clichy.

Wages for any new signings also have to be paid from the transfer war chest and Wenger will sell more players to give him extra muscle in the August transfer window.

The Gunners boss is looking for a central defender, a midfield player and a striker.

Phil Jones of Blackburn is his No.1 choice for the defensive slot, but Arsenal have also watched Jones’s central defensive partner Chris Samba, and Gary Cahill of Bolton.

In midfield Arsenal could also be in the market for Footballer of the Year Scott Parker, who will be sold by relegated West Ham.

Parker’s value will be around £8m and it will be a head-to-head tussle with Tottenham for the England midfielder.

Up front, Karim Benzema appears to be surplus to requirements at Real Madrid and would welcome the chance to work with Wenger.

To help to finance those deals, it is likely that Nicklas Bendtner, Emmanuel Eboue, Denilson and Carlos Vela will be allowed to leave, plus Nasri and Clichy if they fail to agree terms.
