Nigel Reo-Coker and Jermaine Jenas have emerged as shock targets for Chelsea if they miss out on Scott Parker.

New Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas is looking for a midfield replacement for injured Michael Essien.

The Ghanaian will be out for at least six months after suffering a knee ligament injury in training last week.

And out-of-contract Reo-Coker, 27, and Tottenham star Jenas, 28, will be considered if Villas-Boas fails to bag his top target from West Ham.

The Blues were hoping to bring the England man back to Stamford Bridge on loan.

West Ham were originally willing to let Parker – who left Chelsea in July 2005 after a disappointing 18-month spell – go on loan for a fee of around £4m.

But they have now decided they would rather sell after receiving a £7.5m bid from Aston Villa for the 30-year-old.

Chelsea are considering tabling a bid to sign Parker outright.

However, with Spurs also still keen, there are fears they could miss out entirely, prompting Villas-Boas to consider his other options.

Both Reo-Coker and Jenas appeal because, like Parker, they are already familiar with the demands of the Premier League and would be ready to hit the ground running.

Potential deals for the pair are also unlikely to require too big a financial commitment from Chelsea.

Reo-Coker is available on a free after being released by Villa and Chelsea would hope to persuade Spurs to let them have Jenas on loan for the season.

Former West Ham captain Reo-Coker is understood to have been recommended to Villas-Boas by his new No.2, Roberto Di Matteo.

The ex-England Under-21 skipper impressed the Italian when he was in charge of West Brom.

Villas-Boas is already well aware of Jenas, who ended the season down the pecking order at White Hart Lane.

The Chelsea chief was a scout at Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho when the Italians were weighing up a swoop for Jenas.

Meanwhile, highly-rated Blues youngsters Josh McEachran, 18, and Ryan Bertrand, 21, signed new deals yesterday.

Midfielder McEachran was handed a new five-year deal, while left-back Bertrand penned a fresh four-year contract.
