Roberto Mancini has expressed his admiration for Luka Modric in what could be the opening move of a campaign to sign the Spurs star.

Earlier this week the Italian, who is a devout Catholic, went on a three-day pilgrimage to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina following news that the Virgin Mary had appeared in front of six schoolchildren.

And it seemed the trip to the region got Mancini to thinking about Croatian star Modric.

“Luka Modric is an outstanding footballer, a great player. He is definitely one of the best in the Premier League,” said the City boss yesterday.

“But it is by no means easy to get him because he plays for a big club, Tottenham. It is unlikely that they would let him leave.”

Mancini’s views will go down like a lead balloon in North London. Last summer Spurs were furious when their pre-season preparations were overshadowed by intense speculation that Modric was on the verge of a move across town to Chelsea.
