Corinthians are preparing a bid of less than £16million for Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez.

The Brazilians agreed a £40m fee for the Argentine in the summer but saw the move collapse after struggling to finance the deal.

But Corinthians hope Tevez’s souring relationship with City will enable them to secure a much cheaper deal.

Club president Andres Sanchez said: ‘The offer was €40m but it has moved to €18m (£15.7m) because of the problems he is facing there. Although many people don’t believe it, Tevez is closer to Corinthians than you can imagine.’

Tevez’s former club are biding their time until City’s disciplinary investigation against the 27-year-old has been completed.

But Corinthians’ director of football Edu made informal enquiries about Tevez during a recent trip to England.
