Germany extended their lead at the top of Euro 2012 qualifying Group A to move closer to the finals in Poland and the Ukraine next year with a comfortable 4-0 win over Kazakhstan.

Bayern Munich pair Miroslav Klose and Thomas Muller both grabbed a brace in an easy win for Joachim Low’s side in Kaiserslautern.

The win gives Germany an eight-point cushion at the top of their group ahead of their clash with Austria in June while Kazakhstan are still waiting for their first goal, let alone their first point in qualifying.

Low had asked for an early goal and that is what he got.

Klose moved to within eight goals of beating Gerd Muller’s all-time top goalscoring record for Germany with his first touch of the game, touching the ball in from close range for his 60th international goal in the third minute.

He could have scored immediately afterwards too, but he was unable to make the most of a pass from Muller inside the penalty area.

Germany were dominating and looking for a second with Philipp Lahm going close in the 14th minute and both Klose and Mesut Ozil also dangerous.

They doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Ozil’s free-kick was met by Muller at the near post and he headed the ball into the far corner.

The same combination accounted for Germany’s third in the 43rd minute.

Ozil lifted the ball into the area to Muller, who controlled it with his chest before shooting into the bottom left-hand corner.

The fans inside the Fritz-Walter Stadion expected more domination in the second half, but they were disappointed.

Kazakhstan started to create openings of their own as Germany lost their first-half verve, and the first whistles could be heard from the fans.

The jeers were turned to cheers in the 88th minute when Klose wrapped up the scoring with his 61st goal for Germany, another simple tap-in from Sami Khedira’s square pass.
