Everton are in discussions with former Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko over a free transfer move to Goodison Park.

Manager Roberto Martinez made an enquiry for Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry but the 32-year-old is reluctant to move to Everton. He remains an option for Arsenal although they have yet to make an official enquiry.

Martinez has switched instead to Paris St Germain’s Sissoko, 28, who turned down Everton to join Liverpool in 2005. Sissoko has also attracted interest from Cardiff City and is looking for wages of around £70,000 a week.

Everton are expecting an improved bid from Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines but Sissoko will not depend on that. Martinez still wants James McCarthy from Wigan and Spartak Moscow’s Aiden McGeady with another target, Chelsea’s Victor Moses, likely to join Liverpool.

Everton scouts have also added Celtic left-back Emilio Izaguirre, 27, to their list should United succeed in the pursuit of Baines.
