James McFadden was at Everton’s training ground on Monday to put the final touches on a deal to return to the club he left in 2008.

The Scotland international is available on a free transfer following his release from Birmingham in the summer and was strongly linked with Celtic and Wolves while West Ham were also interested.

Toffees boss David Moyes signed McFadden from Motherwell in 2003 and the forward made over 130 appearances in five years before moving to St Andrew’s.

The 28-year-old, who has 48 Scotland caps and 15 international goals, missed most of last season with a cruciate ligament injury but is fighting fit and back on Merseyside.

Everton have struggled for goals this season with seven in as many Premier League games.
