Jermain Defoe has no intention of quitting Tottenham despite his frustration at a lack of playing time.

The striker has been linked with a move to Liverpool after failing to hold down a regular starting role this season.

Defoe has had to bide his time as Emmanuel Adebayor leads the line, with Rafael van der Vaart in behind, but the England international is set for a start this weekend.

Adebayor cannot face Manchester City on Sunday under the conditions of his loan from the Premier League leaders and Harry Redknapp is likely to turn to Defoe.

It will be a rare top-flight start for the forward but he insists he has never considered walking away.

Defoe said: ‘It’s not a case of me saying “I want to go, I’m not playing, I want to leave”. I’ve been here six years – I’ve never said that once. The fans know that.

‘I could understand if I was 19, 20 and I had time on my hands, but I’m 29 now and all I want to do is play.’
