Alan Pardew has identified Jermain Defoe as the man to revitalise Newcastle’s frontline, according to reports in the Sun today.

The Toon boss will move for the Tottenham striker if he fails to land his top target, Turkish hit man Mevlut Erdinc.

Pardew is hoping to tie up a £7m deal for Paris Saint-Germain forward Erdinc, but is losing patience as negotiations the player’s agent drag on, and will switch his attention to Defoe if the deal doesn’t come off.

The England striker is out of favour at Spurs and could be allowed to leave for as little as £10million.

Newcastle still have the lion’s share of the £35million Liverpool paid for Andy Carroll in January to spend, and manager Alan Pardew has repeatedly promised fans that the club has been working hard to sign a big-name forward.

“I am confident we will get a striker in,” he said on Newcastle’s pre-season tour in the US.

“After the Orlando game, there were plenty of fans who came out to see us and mentioned on more than one occasion to me, ‘Where’s the striker?’ It is not something that is far from my mind.

“Everybody will start making moves shortly. We do not want to miss out – but we have been trying to bring a striker in for a while. We are ahead of the game.”
