Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has identified Burnley hotshot Danny Ings as potential striker cover – but faces competition from Newcastle, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Crystal Palace for his services.

Rodgers admitted he will look to spend in the January transfer window following his side’s 3-1 defeat to Hull at the weekend.

And with Daniel Sturridge ruled out for up to two months and Philippe Coutinho only just returning from injury, attacking reinforcements will be high on the Reds boss’ agenda.

Ings is scoring for fun this season, having netted 15 goals in 21 appearances for the Clarets.

The 21-year-old drew attention from a host of Premier League clubs after an electric start to the campaign – where he struck seven times in his first nine outings.

Liverpool will have to fend off interest from Newcastle, Villa, Sunderland and Palace if they want to sign the England Under-21 international in January.

Ings may wish to stay put knowing he would only provide back-up for Sturridge and Luis Suarez at Anfield, although Rodgers will hope to tempt him into a move.

Burnley have allowed their star strikers to move on in recent seasons, with Charlie Austin departing to QPR for £4million this summer and Jay Rodriguez leaving for Southampton in a £6m deal the year before.
