Liverpool have targeted the French full-back, Rod Fanni, as their primary defensive reinforcement for the January transfer window, casting doubt on the Anfield futures of Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger.

Roy Hodgson, the club’s manager, and Damien Comolli, the newly-appointed director of football strategy, believe the 29 year-old’s versatility — he is comfortable at right-back and centre-back — makes him ideal to strengthen Liverpool’s injury-ravaged defence.

Though Rennes would like around £4 million for one of their prize assets, the Premier League club will pay no more than £2.5 million, in accordance with the belief of Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, that premium prices should only be agreed for players with substantial sell-on value.

Hodgson and Comolli may face competition from Marseille for the defender’s signature, but it is believed Fanni, despite supporting the French champions as a child, is prepared to resist the lure of Champions League football to secure a move to England.
