Manchester United are ready to step up their interest in Everton’s England defender Leighton Baines.

With doubts persisting over Patrice Evra’s future at Old Trafford, United are searching for a top-class left back.

Baines, 27, is well known to United’s incoming manager David Moyes – his former boss at Everton – and is the preferred option.

Baines started for England against Brazil in Rio but came off injured in the first half to be replaced by Ashley Cole.

He has been widely been picked as the best left back in the Premier League over the past season due to his exciting forward runs for Everton and unparalleled dead-ball skill.

Evra is far from finished at United but it may mean that other players on their books, such as Fabio, may be pushed even further from the first team.

Baines may also be followed by Marouane Fellaini, who was thought to be close to a United move even before Moyes became boss of the Barclays Premier League champions.
