Manchester United manager David Moyes wants to sign Derby County midfielder Will Hughes in the January transfer window.

The United boss is not convinced that January purchases are the way forward but is keen on signing the youngster.

Predominantly left-footed, the 18-year-old is seen as one of the best young talents in the Championship and has already made almost 50 appearances for the Rams.

Derby manager Steve McClaren concedes Derby will struggle to keep Hughes in January.

He said: ‘Our job is to make sure he makes it.

‘Eventually he will be too good. What we need behind that is players coming through to replace him.’

Hughes, who scored in Derby’s win against Leeds on Saturday, has won four caps for England Under 21s but has withdrawn from the current squad because of a groin injury.
