Newcastle plan to step up their efforts to sign Darren Bent from Aston Villa with a £6million offer expected this week.

Manager Alan Pardew will hold talks with director of football Joe Kinnear today when he returns from holiday in Italy.

Despite Christian Benteke handing in a transfer request at Villa, Paul Lambert is still expected to want to sell Bent to shore up the wage bill.

Villa have new Danish signing Nicklas Helenius to call upon in their strike force, while Gabriel Agbonlahor is also likely to play a key role next season.

Earlier in the week, German side Wolfsburg looked ready to tempt offer Bent the chance to revitalise his career in the Bundesliga.

Newcastle are the only Premier League club not to have made a senior signing this transfer window, and with Joe Kinnear under considerable pressure to prove his worth at the club, a move this week seems likely.
