Patrice Evra has raised the stakes in his contract battle with Manchester United after his agent claimed he could quit the club in the summer.

The France defender’s contract expires in June 2012 and he has been unable to agree new terms with United.

Now Evra’s agent Federico Pastorello says the left-back will leave Old Trafford in the summer if he does not sign a new contract.

Pastorello’s claims will alert Real Madrid and Inter Milan, who are keen on the French skipper, and United rebuffed interest from the Champions League holders last summer.

“He’ll either extend his contract, or he’ll leave,” said Pastorello. “We’ll sit down in the summer with Manchester United and decide whether he will extend his contract or move on.

“There has been interest, and I have read about Real Madrid, but the only official interest was from Inter Milan last summer. We had a long chat with Sir Alex Ferguson and it was decided he would stay in Manchester.”

Evra, 29, has been at Old Trafford for five years and is determined to cash in on what will be the richest contract of his career.

However United are refusing to meet his demands and Pastorello’s comments are an attempt to increase the pressure on them to do a deal.
