New QPR manager Mark Hughes is ready to move for Tottenham’s forgotten keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Hughes is desperate to strengthen his defence and wants a new keeper as part of that rebuilding – and Gomes is high on his wish-list.

The Brazilian, 30, lost his first-team place when Spurs signed Brad Friedel in the summer.

He is now third-choice behind Carlo Cudicini – and Spurs are also keen on signing Newcastle keeper Tim Krul.

Gomes has admitted he is frustrated at Tottenham and wants to leave, but he he is happy in London and QPR are eager to see if they can thrash out a deal.

Rangers’ current keeper, Paddy Kenny, was signed by Hughes’ predecessor Neil Warnock and is seen as very much his man.

Landing Gomes would be a major coup for the west Londoners as, despite committing some high profile howlers in Tottenham colours, he is still viewed as a player with huge potential and a strong reputation.

Gomes joined Spurs for £7million from PSV Eindhoven in 2008 and was regarded as one of the best in Europe, but QPR will be hoping to pay less than that to get him on board.
