Ricky van Wolfswinkel is set to turn down Manchester United to stay at Sporting Lisbon.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been weighing up a move for Van Wolfswinkel and hoped to use United’s bond with Sporting to land the Dutch striker in January or at the end of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani left the Portuguese capital for Old Trafford but 22-year-old Van Wolfswinkel is not ready to follow in their footsteps.

He said: ‘I will stay in Portugal for at least two years. I came here to win trophies and I believe I can do that here. I will not leave.

‘I signed a five-year contract and I am happy at Sporting. There is no reason to leave – the fans are fantastic and I am having a great time.’

Van Wolswinkel was a summer arrival from Utrecht and has impressed with five goals in seven league games.
