Tottenham are confident they are ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Southampton star Luke Shaw.

But the Saints are not willing to sell the 18-year-old left back in the January transfer window and are holding out for a £30million fee in the summer.

Shaw only turned 18 in July but has already made 35 Premier League appearances for Southampton and three for England Under 21s.

Shaw’s representatives have a strong relationship with Tottenham. His agent also represents Spurs forward Erik Lamela.

Southampton are in a strong financial position though and are determined to stick to their £30m asking price, which could spark a bidding war with Chelsea and United in the summer.

Should Shaw move on it is thought he would prefer a move to White Hart Lane due to limited first-team opportunities being available at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is known to be a big fan of his current No 3 Danny Rose but any move for Shaw is likely to come from over the under-pressure boss’s head.
