Southampton have thrown a spanner in the works of their negotiations with Manchester United over Luke Shaw by asking for Javier Hernandez to be included in the deal.
Hernandez found his playing opportunities limited at United last season and his hinted that he may need to leave in search of regular first team football.Tottenham and Aston Villa are both interested in the Mexican international, while Inter Milan and Valencia are also monitoring the situation.
But with Rickie Lambert headed for Liverpool, Jay Rodriguez injured and Dani Osvaldo likely to stay in Italy the Saints accept that they are going to need striking reinforcements.
A player of Hernandez’s ilk would certainly fit the bill but it remains to be seen how the 26-year-old’s inclusion would affect the deal.
United are believed to have offered £27m for Shaw, while Chelsea are also thought to have expressed an interest. But Southampton are holding out for £30m for the 18-year-old.
Hernandez is likely to command substantially more than the £3m difference if he is sold outright, so it remains to be seen how much United are willing to pay if the hitman is included.
