Tom Huddlestone is set to become the latest buy in Paolo Di Canio’s crazy summer transfer spree.

The Spurs midfielder has been given permission to talk to Sunderland after a £5million fee was agreed.

Di Canio, apparently intent on buying an entire new first XI in the summer window, has deals in the pipeline that could make it ten new senior recruits in the next few days.

Huddlestone, 26, is a rare English buy for the Black Cats, with two more deals for Velez Sarsfield’s Argentina defender Gino Peruzzi and Juventus and Italy midfield schemer Emanuele Giaccherini also possible soon.

Spurs are raising cash before making their own big-money swoops, and Huddlestone is a disposable asset.

Di Canio has brought in AZ Alkmaar’s Jozy Altidore for £6m, and completed the free transfers of Cabral from Basel, Valentine Roberge from Maritimo and Modibo Diakite from Lazio.

Vito Mannone has been bought from Arsenal for an undisclosed fee to push to be the new No.1 keeper, while El Hadji Ba was added on Wednesday from Le Havre and joins fellow new boys David Karlsson (IFK Gothenburg) and Duncan Watmore (Altrincham) in the development squad.

Di Canio raised £10m by selling Simon Mignolet to Liverpool.

The other notable departures are Mohamed Elmohamady’s sale to Hull and the release of Titus Bramble and Matt Kilgallon.
