Sunderland will make an improved offer for Kevin Davies after Bolton rejected their initial £250,000 bid.

Sportsmail revealed Sunderland’s interest in the 34-year-old last week and manager Martin O’Neill said: ‘We have have made an offer to Bolton for him, and that has been rejected at the moment.

‘We will see where we stand later on. We would have to organise something with Bolton first of all and at the moment, we seem to be apart in those aspects. But perhaps later on, I might have a better idea.’

O’Neill has an interest in Werder Bremen’s Hugo Almeida and is considering loan options to cover injuries in defence and midfield.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been told he can go out on loan.
