Gareth Bale will not play for Wales against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday after only taking part in light training due to a foot injury.

The 24-year-old Tottenham winger’s future is firmly in the spotlight with long-time admirers Real Madrid still keen on a world record deal, but Manchester United also entering the race.

Moyes and his United predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson are huge fans of Bale and football staff at the club all believe the Wales winger could bring some real star quality to Old Trafford.

United have so far been put off from getting involved by the difficulties of dealing with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who is demanding a world record fee beyond £80million.

It is understood, however, that United’s long-running interest in Bale – they have tracked him since his days at Southampton – could yet lead to a bid as they try to add a star name to Moyes’s playing squad between now and the end of the month.
