Manchester United are prepared to offload flop signing Marouane Fellaini – if they can find someone willing to stump up £15million to buy him.
Fellaini has been a disaster at Old Trafford since his deadline day £27.5m move from Everton last summer, David Moyes’ first signing as United boss. And new manager Louis Van Gaal does not believe the Belgium star has the game to fit into how he wants to play next season.
So the former Premier League champions are willing to take a hit of £12m just to move the 6ft 4in midfielder on.
Fellaini’s time at Old Trafford has been a huge disappointment as he failed to come to terms with the demands of being a United player. He has made just 16 appearances in all competitions and failed to find the net once – something ex-boss Moyes had hoped he would deliver after buying him from Everton.
A wrist injury kept him out for three months but even when he was fit he struggled to earn a place on the bench, let alone the team.
Senior officials in charge at United privately concede they may have bought a dud, and rather than prolonging the agony, they would be willing to cut their losses and sell Fellaini in the interests of United and the player himself.
One problem could be tempting a club to match their £15m valuation, such has been the alarming rate in which Fellaini’s stock has fallen in the past 12 months. In the past clubs like Real Madrid have shown an interest but he is no longer courted by the biggest clubs across Europe.
And that could even see United having to lower their asking price to as little as £10m if Van Gaal makes it clear he doesn’t want him in his plans.
