Manchester United are to reject any offers for Nani or Javier Hernández during this transfer window with manager Sir Alex Ferguson determined to retain both players amid recent uncertainty over their respective Old Trafford futures.

While United are to step up efforts to secure transfers or loans for fringe players such as Dimitar Berbatov, Federico Macheda and Bebe between now and the Aug 31 deadline, senior figures at Old Trafford have insisted that the club “will not entertain” attempts to prise Nani or Hernández from Ferguson’s squad.

Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg are keen to sign Nani, with coach Luciano Spalletti revealing last Friday that contact has been made with United over the Portuguese winger. And Hernández was at the centre of unconfirmed interest from Arsenal and Chelsea following the £22 million signing of Robin van Persie last week.

Mexican forward Hernández, absent from the squad on duty at Everton on Monday, is prepared to fight for his place at United according to his representative, who has insisted that the 24 year-old has no intention of leaving Old Trafford unless the club chooses to listen to offers.

Although Nani, 25, has yet to agree on a new contract to replace the final two years of his current deal, he started the defeat at Everton and has been assured that he is still a key part of Ferguson’s plans.

Having spent almost £50 million on new signings this summer with the purchases of Van Persie, Shinji Kagawa, Nick Powell and Dutch left-back Alexander Buttner, who completed his £3.9 million transfer from Vitesse Arnhem on Tuesday, United are now focused on offloading those players deemed surplus to requirements.
