Gareth-Bale-SouthamptonManchester United are closing in on the signing of Oscar Borg after the West Ham whizkid rejected a contract with the Hammers.

16-year-old Borg reportedly turned down West Ham’s offer clearing the path for Manchester United to swoop.

The left-sided wing-back has been on trial with the Red Devils for the last two weeks and he has travelled with the United Under-18 squad to Ireland to compete in the Milk Cup.

It is thought that he has sufficiently impressed United’s youth coaches to earn a deal at Old Trafford.

Borg’s form in the Hammers’ Under-16 team last season saw him called up regularly to the Under-18s and he even earned a place on the bench for the Under-21 team towards the end of the campaign.

He has been compared to Real Madrid star Gareth Bale due to his direct playing style and strong running with the ball.

West Ham academy coaches have apparently dubbed Borg ‘Gareth’ due to his likeness to the former Southampton trainee.

Ironically Southampton, who sold attacking left-back Luke Shaw to United for a fee worth up to £30m, are also interested in the youngster who would cost as little as £220,000 in line with youth player compensation laws.
