Manchester United have bid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines as David Moyes looks to strengthen his squad ahead of his first season at Old Trafford.

The England man worked under Moyes at Goodison Park, and his signing would replace the aging Patrice Evra who is wanted by former club Monaco.

The bid, understood to have been of around £10m-£12m, was rejected out of hand by the Toffees, who have made two transfer enquiries of their own according to chairman Bill Kenwright.

Moyes has also been linked to a reunion with another Everton star, Marouane Fellaini, as he attempts to build a squad with his own identity after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
