Everton are hoping to unveil Darron Gibson as their latest signing before the weekend after agreeing a £2million deal.

The Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder held talks with Blues boss David Moyes on Thursday and shook hands on a four-year contract worth around £40,000 a week.

Gibson will now complete a medical and confirm the fine points of the contract to complete his move.

He will be Everton’s second signing of the January transfer window following the capture of Landon Donovan on loan from MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy.

Moyes has been tracking the midfielder for some time, after it emerged United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was prepared to let him leave Old Trafford.

He viewed the 24-year-old as an ideal replacement for Mikel Arteta, but he Spaniard’s move to Arsenal happened too late in the summer window for an agreement to be reached.

Now, Moyes is using the little cash he has remaining from the Arteta deal to bring in Gibson, who has made 60 appearances for United in his six years with the club, to Merseyside.

While he ultimately failed to make a serious impact at Old Trafford, Gibson showed enough to retain the faith of Ferguson – who played him in the Champions League semi final last season. He also got a Premier League winners’ medal last season.

But the pair fell out in the summer after the player made clear his determination to allow his contract to run down and become a free agent next summer.

Everton have agreed to pay the fee so United get a return on a player they have developed since his teens.

Moyes wants a striker too, but accepts he may not be able to find the standard of player required in the current window.

Instead, he will turn his sights on finding a centre-half, as first-choice pairing Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin are currently both injured.

Gibson almost signed for Sunderland last summer in a £4.5m deal, but talks broke down over his wage demands.

Everton were quick to agree terms on Thursday and, barring the small print on the contract, should unveil the player on Friday, with Moyes looking to get him in the squad for the weekend clash with Aston Villa.
