Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is back on Zenit St Petersburg’s radar.

The Russian club have set aside around £16million to land a new central defender in the New Year – and old boy Skrtel is one of the names on their list.

The 28-year-old joined Liverpool from Zenit in 2008 and became a mainstay in the Anfield giants’ defence.

But his future looked uncertain when he was dropped during the second half of last season – and then watched manager Brendan Rodgers sign three central defenders in the summer transfer window.

However, he has forced his way back into the first-team picture and has made six appearances this season.

Zenit tried to take him back to St Petersburg this summer and could make a fresh attempt to prise him away after Christmas.
