Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Manchester United are better prepared to face Barcelona than they were in 2009 final, citing Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand as the players vital to victory at Wembley.

Ferguson, looking ahead to a match he described as potentially the “final of the decade”, said his Manchester United squad had matured greatly since losing the 2009 Champions League final in Rome, when Barcelona put on a masterclass of passing to win 2-0.

“If we perform well we have a great chance and I think we have players who will like this stage,” Ferguson said at the press conference.

“We are much more mature. In terms of Rooney’s progress as a player in Europe, he is much more mature than he was in 2009.”

Ferguson continued: “Other players too, like the experience of these two lads beside me (Vidic and Ferdinand), are vital to us.

“Barcelona have fantastic qualities and I think our qualities will show through too, which could make it a really good game.”
