Arsenal have signed the Japanese teenager Ryo Miyaichi after the forward had a successful trial with the club.

The 18-year-old, who is yet to play for Japan’s senior team, will join his new team-mates in January after representing Chukyodai Chuyko high school in the All Japan high school tournament.

The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, said that Miyaichi “trialled with us in the summer and has raw ability which has attracted many clubs around the world. I look forward to helping him fulfil his potential here”.

Wenger, who coached the Japanese side Grampus Eight before joining Arsenal in 1996, also said that “it’s very important that Asia is represented at our club”.

Miyaichi played for Japan at the Under-17 World Cup in 2009.
