Arsene Wenger is facing a defensive crisis after it emerged injured left-back Andre Santos will undergo surgery in his native Brazil this week and is set to be sidelined for three months.

The 28-year-old defender, who joined the Gunners earlier this season for £6.2million from Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, suffered a damaged ligament in his right ankle during last week’s 3-1 Champions League defeat to Greek outfit Olympiakos.

A club statement confirmed: ‘Arsenal Football Club can confirm that, following investigations and subsequent medical opinions by club specialists, left-back Andre Santos will have surgery to repair ligament damage in his right ankle sustained in the game against Olympiakos last week.

‘Andre will have surgery in Brazil this week and is expected to be out for around three months. Everyone at the club wishes him well.’

Arsenal have a major shortage of full-backs on either side of the defence, with Santos, Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson all injured.

Wenger was forced to field four central defenders across the back during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Everton, with Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Per Mertesacker all deployed across the back line.
