Jack Wilshere is set to make his Arsenal return at the end of January.

The crocked midfielder, who has spent the entire season on the sidelines with an ankle injury, is expected to return to training in the next few weeks, and has earmarked a reserve match against Fulham on January 24.

Wilshere is unlikely to be available for selection for the first team before February, but the news will still come as a boost to Arsene Wenger who feared his star midfielder could be sidelined until April following an ankle operation.

Wenger said: ‘The news is good, but he will not be available before the end of January.’

Wilshere’s scheduled return will also come as a boost to Fabio Capello with England due to play a friendly on February 29 before two further matches in March ahead of next summer’s Euro Championships.

Wilshere hasn’t layed for the Gunners this term, but earlier this week stoked up the rivalry with neighbours Tottenham after vowing to donate £3,000 to charity if Spurs finish above Arsenal.

England midfielder Wilshere, who is yet to kick a ball in anger this season due to injury, is confident normal service will soon be resumed. He tweeted: ‘All spurs fans buzzing that they are ahead of us in the league (for once). Its a marathon, not a sprint!

‘I tell you what at the end of the season if spurs finish above arsenal I will give £3000 to charity and if arsenal finish above spurs every spurs fan that follows me must send me a pound each and I will give it to the Jack Marshall charity!’
