Luis Suarez has been hailed as the greatest player in the Premier League by Jamie Carragher.

Suarez is the top flight’s joint-top scorer this season with eight goals and has bagged 11 in total for Liverpool in the current campaign.

Kop team-mate Carragher says he has maintained for the last year that the Uruguayan is the best player in the league, and feels Suarez has answered the critics who claimed he did not score enough goals.

“I’ve said for 12 months now that he’s the best player in the Premier League, because he’s maybe not playing alongside the kind of players that, for example, the Chelsea players can play alongside,” said the Reds vice-captain.

“He’s one of the best players in world football and we are delighted to have him. He does things in a game that we see him doing in training on a daily basis.

“There’s always that question, I think being asked unfairly, of whether he scores enough goals, but isn’t he the top scorer in the league at the moment?

“And that’s in a team that hasn’t won that many league games this season, don’t forget.”

Carragher also hit back at talk that Liverpool have become a one-man team because of Suarez, claiming every top team has a stand-out talent.

He cited Lionel Messi at Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, while Wayne Rooney last week hailed Robin van Persie as Manchester United’s talisman.

“People say that we are dependent on Suarez, but listen, look at Messi at Barcelona, Ronaldo at Real Madrid,” said the defender.

“Don’t get me wrong, Manchester United have had a lot of goalscorers from different positions, but every team has a standout player.

“Luis is one of them, not just in the Premier League, but in the world.”

Suarez’s latest strike, at Chelsea on Sunday, earned Liverpool their sixth draw of the campaign to leave them 13th in the table and with just two league wins from their first 11 matches.

While his back-four colleague Glen Johnson feels the Kopites are turning the corner, Carragher, typically, refused to gloss over the Reds’ poor start.

“We need to start getting wins,” he said. “We might look at the Chelsea draw as a good result, but it’s not as good if we only draw our game at home to Wigan next weekend.

“Drawing games isn’t enough. The Chelsea result can be seen as a good one on its own, but we need to capitalise on the games after it by getting three points.

“It’s better to win one and lose one than draw twice, you get more points. Wins are vitally important for us now, especially at home.”

Carragher claims Liverpool’s biggest problem remains at Anfield – they have won just three league games at home in 2012.

He says they must turn this form around if they are going to give themselves a platform to climb the Premier League table.

“The home form has been a problem for some time,” he said. “It’s not just been Brendan Rodgers’ problem, it’s needed to improve over the last few years.

“We’ve all been talking about it between ourselves and what we can do to improve things, and it has to improve

“You can’t expect to go away from home and win every game, no team can do that. So the home form is imperative.

“No matter whether you’re at the top, middle or bottom of the league, you need good home form.”
