The Irish midfielder set up his Twitter account shortly after midday and took it down again two hours later after attracting a volley of abusive messages about his footballing ability from some of United’s own fans.

Rio Ferdinand heralded Manchester Unitedteam-mate’s arrival into the world of social media, telling his 840,000 online followers: “We have a new member from the Man Utd crew… @dgibbo28 has joined twitterverse show him some love tweeps!”

Some Twitter users immediately guessed that Ferdinand was being optimistic to expect a generous welcome for the 23 year-old, who has faced criticism over his performances in central midfield.

“This isn’t going to end well, Darron Gibson now on Twitter. Should build his character if nothing else,” said one Twitter user.

Despite being renowned for his shooting ability, Gibson has not scored since September in 19 appearances for United.

Sure enough, friendly greetings were drowned out by criticism from disgruntled United fans, who took the opportunity to inform Gibson that he is the “biggest waste of space ever,” and an “abysmal excuse for a footballer.”

Gibson’s account was removed from the site two hours later. Gibson was yet to make his first tweet, but apparently he was not taken with a website which for him at least was serving as an insult aggregation service.

Soon afterwards several United-supporting Twitter users began a campaign to coax Gibson online, posting messages using the hashtag #getgibboback to express their support for the Derry-born midfielder.
