Sunderland skipper Lee Cattermole returns to the squad from suspension.

The midfielder has missed the last four games after collecting a two-game ban for reaching 10 bookings for the season and then two more for his dismissal after the final whistle in the 1-1 derby draw with Newcastle.

Right-back Phil Bardsley (illness and sore ribs) and midfielder Sebastian Larsson, who was rested for Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League win over QPR, are also expected to be available, but central defender John O’Shea and left-back Kieran Richardson (both calf) are out, along with long-term defensive absentees Wes Brown (knee) and Titus Bramble (Achilles/calf).

Everton manager David Moyes has a few injury doubts.

Darron Gibson returned from a five-match absence for the weekend’s win at Swansea and is set to keep his place but fellow midfielder Steven Pienaar is cup-tied.

Midfielder Royston Drenthe was missing for Saturday’s match, as were Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Seamus Coleman (thigh).
