Manchester City midfielder David Silva could return in Sunday’s derby against Manchester United after two games out with a thigh injury.

Right-back Micah Richards is back in training after missing the start of the season and could be in contention but left-back Gaël Clichy is not yet ready to feature.

Captain Vincent Kompany came through his comeback unscathed in midweek but fellow-centre back Martin Demichelis is a long-term casualty.

Meanwhile, David Moyes looks set to plunge Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand into their third match in a week at the Emirates.

The pair have not operated in tandem three times in such quick succession since 2010 but Moyes seems certain to stick with them, having already done so for the victories over Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen.

Rafael, Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones all missed the midweek Champions League win, but Nani is available after suspension.
Although he missed David Beckham’s winning goal at Maine Road in November 2000 in order to attend his son’s wedding, the last time a Manchester derby took place without Sir Alex Ferguson overseeing events was way back in October 1986, when goals by Mick McCarthy and Frank Stapleton earned a 1-1 draw.

Back then, the derby was a mid-table clash, but Saturday’s game will be influential the title race and a win could prove crucial for Manuel Pellegrini or David Moyes.
