Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has been ruled out of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Welbeck has been missing with a knee injury since the middle of October and manager David Moyes has confirmed the 22-year-old will not recover in time to face the leaders.

Jonny Evans may return after a back problem, whilst Robin van Persie will almost certainly face his old club despite missing a penalty following his introduction as a substitute into the midweek Champions League draw with Real Sociedad.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will check on the fitness of England midfielder Jack Wilshere (ankle) ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Manchester United.

Midfielder Mathieu Flamini is set to return to full training following his groin injury and so could feature at Old Trafford.

Theo Walcott (abdominal surgery), Yaya Sanogo (back), Lukas Podolski (hamstring), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Abou Diaby (both knee) remain sidelined.

For all the talk of Sunday’s visit to Old Trafford being the first true test of Arsenal’s mettle this season, the same could be said of David Moyes and his early impact at Manchester United.

Moyes has yet to deliver a statement of intent against key rivals, having lost at Liverpool and Manchester City while drawing with Chelsea.

Moyes needs a win as much as Arsenal, for more than just three points.
