Manchester United are expected to give a debut to Marouane Fellaini in midfield against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

But Wayne Rooney is still absent, so Danny Welbeck will lead the attack. Chris Smalling is likely to feature at right back, for Phil Jones.

Meanwhile, Jonny Williams and Jack Hunt are out of Crystal Palace’s trip to United and face months on the sidelines.

Academy graduate Williams suffered ankle ligament damage on international duty with Wales and new signing Hunt broke his ankle in training, while there are a couple other knocks manager Ian Holloway was not willing to divulge before the match.

Late acquisitions Adrian Mariappa, Barry Bannan, Cameron Jerome, Jimmy Kébé and Adlene Guedioura will be hoping to make their first appearance for Palace at Old Trafford.

Aaron Wilbraham, Owen Garvan, Stephen Dobbie and Florian Marange will not feature after being left out of Palace’s 25-man squad.

Sandwiched between a defeat at Anfield and a trip to Manchester City, David Moyes cannot afford Manchester United to drop points against promoted Crystal Palace, otherwise a tricky start to the season becomes a torrid one.

Palace, with just one league victory away from home in 16 games, would appear to be lambs to the slaughter, but they had the same billing when they visited Old Trafford in the Carling Cup two years – and won.

Stat of the game: Manchester United have suffered their worst start in terms of Premier League points won for five years.
