Southampton could be without nine first-team players through injury against Manchester City.

Victor Wanyama and Nathaniel Clyne joined the growing injury list after being forced off in Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, joining Morgan Schneiderlin, Guly do Prado and Danny Fox on the sidelines.

Jose Fonté is a doubt for the clash with City, while Paulo Gazzaniga will again start in goal as Artur Boruc fractured his hand last week and back-up Kelvin Davis is struggling wide a side injury. The only good news is Gastón Ramírez’s return to fitness after illness.

Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is optimistic captain Vincent Kompany will be fine to keep his place in the team.

The Belgium defender, who has been sidelined by a thigh problem, made his first appearance since Oct 5 on Wednesday when he played for the whole of the 3-2 league win at West Brom, and there have been no ill-effects reported after that outing.

Striker Stevan Jovetic, defender Matija Nastasic and playmaker David Silva will all miss the Southampton game due to their calf injuries, but Pellegrini has indicated the latter of the trio could be involved in Tuesday’s Champions League match at Bayern Munich.

After claiming only their second league win on the road at West Brom in midweek, a repeat for Manchester City, at St Mary’s Stadium, could ultimately come to be seen as a turning point.

Three successive defeats have taken the edge off Southampton’s impressive start but performances have been good and there was no shame in losing at Arsenal and Chelsea.

However, the spate of injuries gives Mauricio Pochettino further cause for concern.
