Goalkeeper Jack Butland could make his first Premier League start for Stoke against Liverpool on Sunday, though Thomas Sorensen is back in training.

With Asmir Begovic having broken a finger, Butland came off the bench to replace Sorensen against Everton and started the FA Cup third-round win over Leicester.

Robert Huth also trained with the first team this week but may not be ready, Andy Wilkinson remains sidelined and Oussama Assaidi is unavailable to face his parent club.

Meanwhile, striker Daniel Sturridge is set to return to the Liverpool squad.

The England international returned to full training this week having not featured in a matchday squad since the Merseyside derby on Nov 23.

Centre-back Daniel Agger has been ruled out for three to four weeks with a calf strain, but Mamadou Sakho is back after a hamstring injury.
With the likelihood that Liverpool will head into this fixture in sixth – presuming nearest rivals Everton and Spurs win – breaking the club’s hoodoo over Stoke is overdue.

A narrow home win against Mark Hughes’ side on the opening day set Liverpool up for a decent first half of the season, but there remains plenty of work to do to secure the top four place that will define the campaign.
