Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has once again reported a clean bill of health as he prepares for Saturday evening’s Premier League clash with Tottenham.

Defender John O’Shea was Poyet’s only real concern after appearing to aggravate the groin problem he suffered at Aston Villa last weekend during Wednesday night’s 4-3 defeat by Chelsea.

However, the Republic of Ireland international has been able to train normally and is expected to be fit. J

Meanwhile, Spurs’ defender Jan Vertonghen “rolled” his ankle in Wednesday’s 2-1 Premier League victory at Fulham and manager Andre Villas-Boas has admitted the defender is a doubt.

Moussa Dembélé’s ongoing hip complaint ruled him out of the Fulham clash at the last minute, but after resting he could come back into contention.

Fullback Danny Rose has made a tentative return to training, but is not yet ready for a playing comeback.

Sunderland acquitted themselves well in the midweek defeat to Chelsea, but playing well is less important than picking up points when you are bottom of the table.

By the time they kick-off against Tottenham, the Black Cats could be eight points adrift of safety.

Spurs’ win over Fulham was a timely tonic for Andre Villas-Boas, but this will not be an easy trip given how closely Chelsea were to dropping points here against such revitalised relegation stragglers.

Stat of the game: Spurs are unbeaten in their last three visits to the Stadium of Light where they won 2-1 last term with a winner from Aaron Lennon.
