Sunderland are poised to appoint former Brighton coach Gus Poyet as Paolo Di Canio’s replacement.

Di Canio was sacked by the Black Cats after a dressing-room revolt led by several senior players.

And Poyet is set to replace the Italian at the Stadium of Light, having left his post at Brighton at the end of last season.

Reports emanating from Italy indicate that Poyet has held several meetings with Sunderland owner Ellis Short, who has picked the Uruguayan to take charge.

Poyet guided Brighton to the Championship play-offs last season, having taken over when the club was in League One.

But he left after a stand-off between himself and the club turned sour.

Poyet is expected to be confirmed as Sunderland manager in the coming days.
