james-milnerLiverpool are confident they will clinch the signing of Manchester City contract rebel James Milner in the summer.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers, according to ESPN, is keen on a deal for the England midfielder and believes the promise of regular first-team football could entice him to Anfield.

Milner, who has only six months left on his current deal with City, is expected to leave the Premier League champions in June after talks over a new contract broke down.

The 29-year-old is understood to have already told his City team-mates that he is likely to leave the Etihad having been informed there will be no improvement on the contract offer he snubbed last month.

Rodgers’ No.1 priority is revamping his midfield ranks following the confirmation of captain Steven Gerrard’s summer move to MLS outfit LA Galaxy.

Reds legend Gerrard, 34, has signed an 18 month deal with the Galaxy and will join them in July.

Although a loan return to Merseyside for Gerrard has not been ruled out, Rodgers is determined to find a long-term successor to the former England skipper.

He has held an interest in Milner for some time and is prepared to offer him a long-term contract in a bid to lure him to Liverpool.
