Liverpool have signed young defender Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of around £8million.

The 20-year-old was originally born in London but has represented Portugal at U18, U19 and U20 level.

Brendan Rodgers has been desperate to add defensive cover to his squad and the starlet is thought to be an ideal back-up for the first team.

But despite initially being cover for Kolo Toure and Daniel Agger, Ilori told the club’s official website that he wants to play as much as possible.

He said: “It feels great being a Liverpool player – coming to the Premier League has always been a dream for me.

“I’m going to try and achieve everything I can. I want to play as much as possible and we’ll see what the future holds.

“I will give my all and try my best to help the team.”

Ilori added that Liverpool’s history was one of the club’s major pulling powers.

He said: “I know the history of the club and the Premier League is the best league in the world, in my opinion.

“Liverpool, have a great team and I think it’s the place for me to be at the moment.

“I know there have been some great teams here in the past and the club has won a lot of trophies and I want to be a part of it.”

Liverpool also hope to wrap-up a deal for Mamadou Sakho today.
