Liverpool will close out the deal for Charlie Adam by throwing a couple of their promising youngsters into the equation.

Talks over Blackpool’s Scotland midfielder had foundered over the price, with the Reds unwilling to meet their whopping £12million valuation.

But a compromise will be reached after Liverpool Director of Football Damien Comolli introduced the prospect of player exchange during negotiations over the weekend.

Seasiders chairman Karl Oyston maintains he is under no pressure to sell, even though Adam has only 12 months left on his contract and Blackpool are facing up to life back in the Championship next season.

Comolli is hoping that £8million in cash, plus the loan of teenage midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for a full season, and young right-back Stephen Darby, will tip the balance.

Blackpool are keen on a straight cash deal, and at their valuation, but realise they could lose Adam on a free when his contract expires.

Midfielder Shelvey, 19, was a £1.7million buy from Charlton last summer and impressed enough to make 15 appearances in his debut season.

Local boy Darby has been at Liverpool for five years, but spent much of last season on loan at Swindon and Notts County.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is also chasing Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing, Birmingham centre-back Scott Dann, Arsenal left-back Gael Clichy and Ipswich’s wonder-boy striker Connor Wickham.
