Coutinho-LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho has agreed a new long-term contract at Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers challenged him to develop into a “world class” talent.

The Brazilian had three years to run on his existing deal, but his importance to the cause at Anfield has been underlined by the rush to give him an extension.

His incentive-based contract is understood to run until 2020.

Coutinho was signed two years ago for an £8.5m fee from Inter Milan and, at the age of 22, Liverpool manager Rodgers believes the attacking midfielder possesses the attributes to blossom into one of the best players of his type in the world.

He conjured two assists in the weekend victory over West Ham to take his tally for the season to four, while Coutinho also has two goals.

Rodgers believes scoring more goals will take Coutinho’s performances to another level and said he will benefit from the return to fitness of Daniel Sturridge.

“You can see he is in a real good moment,” said Rodgers. “His performance level is at a real high level which is great to see because he’s a little magician with the ball.

“His courage and bravery to get on the ball is fantastic. If he can continue to improve, and there are areas where he can improve like his goalscoring, then he gets into that bracket of being world class.

“He has come into his own over the last couple of months purely because of the movement up front.

“He is the type of player who is creative and looks for the last pass, but for that you need the movement in front of the ball and people to penetrate in behind.

“At the beginning of the season, we didn’t quite have that in the team, so he was having longer on the ball and maybe getting caught on it more than he would.”

“His game has been about making the goal and creating the goal, but as he gets more experience he will understand better and there will be other players to make those final passes,” said Rodgers.

“That allows him to penetrate a little bit further forward. He will be looking to improve the accuracy in his shooting. But at the minute I don’t have many complaints about him.

“He is pressing the game really well, he is aggressive and hunting the ball. You see his quality in his two assists at the weekend. They were sublime.

“The first pass was incredible invention. He was half looking away when he made the pass and the second one looks an easy pass but he has put it to the correct side for Daniel’s touch and finish.
