Louis van Gaal has been promised a £200million transfer war chest to bring the glory days back to Manchester United.

Van Gaal was confirmed as the club’s new manager yesterday, ending weeks of speculation following David Moyes’ sacking.

With the Dutchman promising to “make history” at Old Trafford, United fans hope the success of years gone by is set for a swift return when he officially takes over in July.

Van Gaal will be given a £200m budget to overhaul the Red Devils’ squad.

United have already submitted a £27m bid for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, but the 62-year-old wants to strengthen across the board.

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is a £20m-plus target, while Van Gaal is keen on his club team-mate Marco Reus and international colleague Toni Kroos.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho is also under consideration, while Arjen Robben is another – if unlikely – option.
